Duplex Stainless Steel

Duplex stainless steel is a family of stainless steels with a dual-phase microstructure consisting of approximately equal amounts of austenite and ferrite. This unique structure combines the best properties of both stainless steel types, providing high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and outstanding durability in demanding environments.

Duplex stainless steels are widely used in industries where conventional stainless steels may not offer sufficient resistance to corrosion or mechanical stress.

Key Advantages of Duplex Stainless Steel

High Mechanical Strength

Duplex stainless steel offers approximately twice the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316. This allows designers and engineers to use thinner sections without compromising performance, resulting in weight and cost savings.

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

Duplex grades provide superior resistance to:

  • Pitting corrosion
  • Crevice corrosion
  • Chloride-induced corrosion
  • Stress corrosion cracking

This makes duplex stainless steel particularly suitable for marine, chemical, and industrial applications.

Cost-Effective Performance

The combination of high strength and corrosion resistance often reduces total lifecycle costs by lowering maintenance requirements and extending service life.

Good Weldability

Modern duplex stainless steels can be fabricated and welded using conventional methods while maintaining their mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties.

Long Service Life

Duplex stainless steel performs reliably in aggressive environments, helping to minimise downtime, repairs, and replacement costs.

Duplex 2205
